Can physiotherapy help me?Physiotherapists often see patients with chronic pain on an individual basis. Your physiotherapist will assess you and work with you to agree a treatment plan. A specific manual treatment such as massage or soft tissue mobilisation may be appropriate, or perhaps acupuncture. What is the difference between a physiotherapist, an osteopath and a chiropractor? All three treat joints and musculoskeletal structures, and all are trained in the sciences, and licensed professionals with their respective governing bodies. There is a lot of overlap between these clinicians. Chiropractors tend to focus their treatment more around the spine, and generally use shorter and more forceful movements in their manipulations, called adjustments. Physiotherapists, on the other hand, use a broader range of techniques, including stretches, manual techniques, adjunct modalities (e.g. ultrasound, infrared) and exercises to improve mobility and prevent injuries. Physiotherapists also use a more exercise-rehabilitation approach to treatment and recovery. Osteopaths also manipulate soft tissue through a range of treatments, enhancing blood supply to help tissues heal. They take a more holistic approach to treating the body as a unit. Osteopathy is also preventative and aims to avoid potential issues by making small changes to your lifestyle.
